Just a few days after the European Union (EU) reached an agreement on COVID-19 with China, the world’s number one producer of virus-infected pork has announced that they will be turning off their domestic slaughterhouses, and shutting down their facilities in the EU.
According to a statement from PSA (Perdue and Smithfield), in a bid to stymie the outbreak, the company will be voluntarily shuttering their pork processing plants in France, Italy, and Spain, as well as all of their farms in countries that have or are currently under strict lockdown.
In their announcement, the company cited the unprecedented conditions in Europe, and how they would be running into trouble as a result of the restrictions.
“We recently received updated guidance on our domestic operations that we agreed with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to adjust the approach to our plants. When combined with information from the European Union that some countries have shut down restaurants, schools and other public places, we believe it is necessary to reduce our operations in the European Union.”
